Family therapy – strengthening relationships and finding solutions

Family therapy is an effective method of improving relationships within the family and solving problems. It focuses on the quality of relationships between family members, helping to understand and change patterns that generate tension or conflict. Family therapy includes the topic of relationships, child-parent relationships, developmental crises and ways to solve them.

When is family therapy necessary?

Family therapy is especially recommended if the family has:

1. Problems related to children and young people – for example, behavioural difficulties, communication problems or learning difficulties.
2. Eating disorders – the support and understanding of family members plays a big role in recovery.
3. Mourning and trauma – overcoming difficult life events in the family.
4. Mental health disorders – for example, supporting a family member with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder.
5. Conflicts and difficulties in communication between family members – resolution of misunderstandings and quarrels.
6. Relationship problems – for example, restoring trust, issues related to separation or relationships in stressful situations.

Approaches and methods of family therapy

Family therapy is aimed not only at improving relationships, but also at changing behavioral patterns if necessary. One such approach is cognitive behavioral family therapy, which helps to identify and change ineffective behavioral patterns.

As a rule, family therapy takes place with several family members at the same time, but individual family therapy may also be required at certain stages. This means that even though therapy is done one-on-one with a therapist, the family context and systemic connections are taken into account.

How long does family therapy last?

The duration of one session is 1.5 hours. The duration of therapy depends on the complexity of the problems and the willingness of family members to cooperate.
